One type of new media I would introduce that does not currently exist would be an extended application of communication within a school or higher education community, such as Baruch college. I feel as though there is a lack of connection between students who attend the same university and that may lead to negative feelings regarding the overall environment of Baruch as well as the levels of joy and pride experienced by students when on campus. I would suggest creating a new media that allows students to connect with one another through an application unique to every professor and class so that every student in that class is able to ask questions and contribute new material outside of class. An extended application of this new technology would be that students can use this application to connect with former student who have also taken the same class or future student who plan on taking the class. This platform would be strictly educational and for academic purposes, seeing a

P2P

File sharing is the transfer of files from one computer to another over a network or the internet. Peer to peer file sharing is a form of file sharing that transfers and shares files among people online. Examples of P2P sharing include Gnutella and Bit Torrent. Gnutella allows individuals to locate and send out a request for a file they want to download. There are both positive aspects as well as unintended negative consequences of this. An example of its negative effects is demonstrated in the New York Times article, "Digital Pirates Winning Battle with Studios." It focuses on anti-piracy campaigns and policies on movies and things of that matter, however these attempts do not work and peer to peer file sharing the cause. The article mentioned Warner Brothers creation of an anti piracy campaign to monitor the physical copy of the movie, "The Dark Night." However, the campaign was a failure because illegal copies had still been downloaded millions of times. Peer to

Privacy

On social media there has been an increasing loss of privacy and confidentiality. Social media enables the sharing of private information for a wide audience. The information that users share on social media lead to their loss of privacy, it can expose their name, picture, their date of birth, location, family members, among many other things. When posting an update or sharing a picture they can expose their current location, what they plan on doing and even exposes their likes, leaving users vulnerable. The information shared on social media is never really private and even if deleted, is never actually gone. There is an also a loss of privacy due to amount of information these sites are collecting on users to then share with other companies. The data that users themselves share about themselves and the activity of these users on these sites has become valuable information in today's age. Companies constantly attempt to gather the most information possible, the more detailed, the

Advice

A suggestion I would make to improve Baruch college would be to use open source textbooks. This would greatly benefit the students of the school especially since textbooks are costly, multiple textbooks have to be bought for every class at a cost of about $80 each or more. These textbooks are most likely not going to be used again by the student and are continuously being updated, leaving older versions to become outdated. By using open source textbooks, professors would assemble parts of the textbook, compiling materials from a wide variety of sources that can be edited and updated immediately. This would allow for collaboration of a team to put all information within in. Doing this would drop the cost of textbooks for students to zero and the money that is saved from this can be used for other purposes within the school.

Creativity and New Media

Image
A way that I am able to display creativity through the use of new media, is through the usage and creation of a Bitmoji. This is a personalized character that is created by the user, typically made to look like oneself. It allows to personalize physical features of the character such as hairstyle, face shape, eye color, etc, as well as clothing, allowing for creativity. The bitmoji is used across a variety of media and different apps on your phone. It is a creative way to express oneself and communicate with others. It has hundreds of stickers that can be used to express how one feels or one's mood without having to explain it. For example, when texting someone, instead of sending a simple text, I can choose to send a "sticker" of my bitmoji that already has a message on it as demonstrated below with my personal Bitmoji:                                 .

HW Creativity

New media has allowed for the creation of new forms of art. Music is an industry that has changed due to new media, creating new genres. The New Yorker article, “The New Math of Mashups,” mentions the creation of mashups, in which songs are the vocal from one song, laid over the music from another. Digital software is used to create these mashups, the creation of mashups would not have been possible without the use of new media. Anyone can create new music today in the comfort of their own home and share what they have created through new media such as Youtube. There are so many things that can be created from one's imagination through the use of new media. New media technology allows to demonstrate and bring to life what we visualize in our minds. New media tools allows to foster creativity because when there are many different tools at one's disposal, people have the ability to produce anything and even be innovators. Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

Virtual worlds can be used in many different ways and forms in our present society. Although virtual worlds and virtual reality may seem very futuristic, there have been many technological developments and advocates that have been contributing to the progression of its capabilities throughout the years. One way that virtual worlds may be used to impact our society in a beneficial way is by creating scenarios for professional such as doctors and pilots to be able to practice simulations of real world events and increase their level of skill and competency in those areas. I believe this is a pro for society because without virtual world training such as this would be nearly impossible. Another pro of virtual worlds would be the bridge it creates between community and creativity. Virtual worlds are a platform that allow creative individuals to interact with one another and share / learn from common experiences. A negative side of virtual worlds is a very common one int erpreted by society
